It is ironic that when Obama sat down at a picnic table with beer-in-hand to have a teachable moment, we were having quite another. At the very moment Obama guzzled a pint of beer with Officer Crowley and Gates, his “Cash for Clunkers” program stalled out. What a teachable moment it was!
Debbie Stabenow, along with Congressman Waxman, introduced legislation to save the world from global climate catastrophe by cloaking it with a trade-in deal for gas guzzling cars. As you are aware, the government is giving (if it has not been paused again) $3,500 to $4,500 per vehicle if it met the government’s definition of “clunker.” If your vehicle guzzles 1 gas you are able to trade it in for a vehicle that may even get only a measly 2 miles per gallon more. What this recent program highlights is the lack of government’s ability to effectively manage capitalistic endeavors.
Only if Congress could learn from history what the common man already knows. A principle found as early as 2,000 years ago states that, “If one cannot demonstrate success in a smaller sphere, then why should he be trusted to be successful in a larger sphere?” One philosopher put it this way: “Whenever you propose to consult with anyone about your affairs, first observe how he has managed his own; for he who has shown poor judgment in conducting his own business will never give wise counsel about the business of others.”2 This strikes at the root of the problem. Obama, Stabenow and other socialists cannot be trusted to tell us how to conduct our affairs.
One car salesman recognized this discontinuity when he said, “If they can’t administer a program like this, I’d be a little concerned about my health insurance.”3 Unlike the “Cash for Clunkers” program, if the national health care program is established, there will be no ability to put it on “pause.”
It is high time to put leaders who know history and trust the common man to run their own capitalistic endeavors!
