Local State Senate Candidate on the Stump

BY NANCY ANGELLOTTI STAFF WRITER
HADLEY TWP. — It’s only March, but we’re well on the path to the August and November elections. In addition to millage issues, voters are going to be hearing more and more from candidates.

Tuesday night, Todd Courser, Republican candidate for State Senate 25th District, addressed residents in Hadley Township during their board meeting and took questions. Courser is a life-long Lapeer County resident who is both an accountant and an attorney with offices in Lapeer.

Courser started out by discussing the impact of the Michigan Business Tax. “It’s essentially the worst business tax in the country,” he said. He said the state must correct the cost of doing business.

He also said that government needs to be cut back at the state level. “Our state is one of the worst states at getting dollars to the classroom,” Courser said. “It gets eaten up by bureaucracy well before it gets to the teachers or the classroom.”

When a resident asked Courser to give some specific examples of areas where he would seek cutbacks, Courser offered up three ideas.

First, even though he acknowledged it was a “holy grail,” Courser said he would look at cutbacks in education costs by providing free market opportunities. He said he envisioned actually being able to provide better education in the process, too.

The Department of Corrections was another area where Courser would look to free up dollars.

Finally, Courser said he would consider welfare for cutbacks. With one in six on public assistance in the state, Courser said, “It’s just not sustainable.”

Courser also confirmed he supported a part-time legislature, noting, “They’re already part-time.” He said that most states do not have a permanent legislature.

Courser met with residents following the meeting.

Lauren Hager and Phil Pavlov have also made appearances on the stump in recent months. They, too, are Republican candidates for the office being vacated by term-limited Jud Gilbert, R-Algonac.

Democrats who have also filed statements of organization to run for the spot include Jason Davis and Jason Blauet.

Several of the candidates have set up websites which include information about their positions on issues.

My Commitment to Michigan

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Dear Friends,

Effective leadership is supported by cooperation. As community leaders, your knowledge and contribution are vital to developing new strategies for Michigan. As a candidate to become your State Senator, I am interested in meeting with you to discuss your perspectives and concerns.

I am a life-long resident of Lapeer County.  I graduated from Lapeer East High School, attended Mott Community College, and graduated from both the University of Michigan – Flint and Thomas M. Cooley Law School.  My background and professional experience is in law, business, accounting, and taxation.  I have been an independent business owner for the last 14 years.  As an attorney I specialize in estate planning, probate, taxation and tax resolution, and bankruptcy.  I have been married for 14 years and have four children.  Three of my children are homeschooled and one attends St Paul’s Lutheran School.

People have asked me why I want to work as your state senator. Each week I do between 10 and 15 new consultations with families that have worked for many years to now see their jobs, businesses, homes, and life savings gone.  The need for a new direction in Michigan has broken my heart.  I am fed up with the same old politics with no progress for our state!  It is time to pump new blood into Lansing to solve the problems we now face.   I long to see a state that is inviting to risk takers, entrepreneurs, and small business owners.  We have created in this state a situation where no business, given a choice, will locate here.  Our costs for doing business are far higher than other states and as a consequence we have not just lost business to other countries, but have lost huge amounts of our economy to other states.

There are many reasons for this failure of our state’s economy, and both parties have played a role in that failure.  I believe the people of Michigan are ready for a new direction that is focused on individual liberty, freedom, and real fiscal restraint.  If we will allow individuals to be creative and prosperous, then businesses will return to Michigan and jobs as well! When businesses return and people are prospering, we will have enough resources to provide for solid education and a good, basic government for our citizens.

At this very moment nearly one in five individuals is on some form of public assistance! This is an unsustainable course for our state!  I am asking you to join my campaign to turn Michigan back toward prosperity and freedom.

I am running a campaign that may be slightly different than my competitors.  I will not go the way of conventional wisdom in political campaigns, which is to say as little as possible about any issue so that I can change my position with each new crowd, but rather I will state simply and clearly the way forward for our state These guiding principles and precepts are the keys to freeing our people from the tyranny of an overtaxing, overspending, and over regulating government. I am committed to this plan.

· Eliminate the MBT (Michigan Business Tax)Just reducing this tax as some have suggested will not correct our failed business climate.  This tax must be eliminated. We compete against states that have no business tax. This tax was created and increased by both democrats and republicans in backroom deals. Our Michigan businesses then responded by closing their doors and moving south in huge numbers! We must fight this sort of destructive deal making!

· “Red Tape Effect” – New businesses face insurmountable obstacles when they try to locate in Michigan. Right now a business can wait months or even years to get the approvals needed to develop a facility in our state.  In some southern states it is literally a few weeks from purchase to site development. Also, Michigan is known for its strong union roots but now these are a repellant to any new business that might locate here. We need to be a Right to Work state. We need to eliminate the obstacles in order to draw new businesses to Michigan.

· Seniors Property Taxes – In some states seniors receive exemptions on property taxes. Many of our seniors are being forced from their homes due to excessive property taxes.  We should move toward giving our seniors relief from this oppressive tax in Michigan.

· Falling Property Values – Property values have fallen but that has not been reflected in our property taxes.  Right now the only process for appealing residential property taxes is confusing, varies from county and state and is basically failing our citizens. We need a clear way for individuals to seek redress for the downward adjustments made to their property values.

· Unfunded Mandate – Unfunded mandates are requirements demanded by the state but paid for by the local government. The Michigan Constitution prohibits this action but lawmakers have routinely ignored the law. The State of Michigan needs to pay for what it demands from local governing bodies.

· Law Enforcement – We must address the issue of our underfunded law enforcement as well as the early release of violent criminals and sexual offenders who are invading our streets again! The job of law enforcement is impossible without the correct amount of resources.

· Agriculture - From crop, horse, cattle, hog, and small family farms, Michigan has a large number of farms that contribute to the economy.  Farmers are the “third leg” of our economy and cannot be overlooked as a vital industry in Michigan. Farmers need help with reduced regulation from the DEQ and less taxes. We must do a better job of protecting this vital part of the Michigan economy.

· Choice in Education – We must move to develop choice in education and make every option available to families that will allow them to make wise decisions for their own children. We have schools in Michigan where less than 25% of the children graduate and of those who graduate from these schools, less than half can read past the 6th grade level.  We cannot allow these children to be enslaved in a life without the possibility of success and prosperity. We have a very powerful teacher’s union in Michigan that controls education and much of our political process and this desperately needs to be changed.  The government and special interests cannot assume the rights of parents to choose how and where to educate their children.

· Natural Resources - Michigan’s natural resources are its crowning glory. We have a huge outdoor sports and tourism economy. It needs to be protected and developed further. Where possible, our state lands need to be turned over to local control. This makes it possible to have citizens involved in determining the use of their “own backyards.”

· 2nd Amendment – Our Constitution speaks clearly to the right to bear arms in our country.  Unfortunately the laws of our state are terribly unclear.  Our state needs to move toward a policy that is in keeping with the intentions of our founding fathers, “…the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

My desire is to work to make this state a place where my children and yours can find prosperity and success! For this goal to be achieved, people will have to sacrifice and fight to restore the principles of our Founding Fathers. My guiding philosophy for legislation is dependant on the Bible and prayer, the Constitution, and finally, the needs of our society to have a controlled and restrained government.

I look forward to speaking with you in the near future. May God richly bless and guide you and your family!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

bulbThis is an odd way to write my annual letter to my friends, but we are in desperate times. All the more reason to write a letter of encouragement and hope!

It is that time again. Every year it gets faster and faster. This year again we have no more children to report. They are growing pretty quickly now and seem to eat like a swarm of locusts. We are beginning to feel the full force of the activities that 4 children create. We had them in soccer this fall in North Branch and, with only 3 in soccer and 1 in volleyball, we had as many as 8 practices and 4 to 6 games in a week.

People ask me every year whether or not I will continue to do taxes and my answer is the same, “Until God stops me from doing it, I will be meeting with clients and doing tax returns.” I always enjoy seeing the folks during tax season! I have lots of changes in my life but one thing that is constant each year is tax season. In my practice, we continue to grow the legal services offered each year and we now have no slow season. We are doing estate planning, elder law, probate, tax resolution, bankruptcy, and some litigation. It is best to stay busy and not complain about having a lot of work in this crazy economy.

Biblical Servanthood – whether you are a Christian or not, I think you will appreciate what I am saying. My heart is definitely torn for the great many families in our state facing economic ruin. We have a failure of leadership; many will serve but do not understand servant leadership. Many elected officials don’t understand that serving is supposed to be a sacrifice and not a gain for themselves at the expense of those who elected them. Our Founders were not paid to serve and some paid a sacrifice of everything they had, including their lives, to serve their fellow countrymen!

As many of you know, I am again running for office and seeking to serve as a State Senator for our district. The district that I would be representing is the 25th district and encompasses both Lapeer and St Clair counties. The role of a senator is to represent the citizens and give them a voice in government decisions.

This pursuit has been a challenge and has stretched me and my family. My children and my wife have been on board and sacrificing a great deal to see this campaign through. I have to say I have never heard of children who are so intent on praying for their dad. It has more than once broken my heart and is incredibly humbling. They are constantly in prayer for me, asking God to provide the donations for the campaign, the volunteers to run the race, and for victory. They are ages 10, 7, 6, and 4 and all are old veterans now of the campaign trail. They were witness to the personal attacks that came in the last election. They are literally growing up on the campaign trail.

I am, like a lot of folks, fed up with the troubles our state is in and the failure of leaders to address the troubles! These same leaders just expect to be reelected and promoted. Unbelievably, they generally get promoted without one bill ever being passed into law from their office. We have a huge government and it is overfed.

Many wonder why I am running and they have asked if it is what God wants me to do with my life. I really don’t have a good answer for that, other than to say, “Greater love hath no man than to lay down his life for his friend.” That is what changing things in this state will require: men and woman laying down their own goals and dreams to fight to create a better place for others who come after them. When men of principle are not willing to stand and fight for the rights we are losing, who are we left with to lead us?

I have seen my own Republican party fail to provide leadership in this state when we created the worst business tax in the country. Without an end to the MBT (Michigan Business Tax) we will not see growth return. We watch now as the last few businesses struggle to survive. My own party fails to accept its responsibility for helping to destroy the most impressive manufacturing state in the history of the world! (Please read that last sentence again!) Yes, the other party has its own problems and they should be held to account by the voters of this state. Forgive me for being so critical but this just weighs heavy on my heart. We need to have a state that is able to provide businesses a good environment to make a profit. If we do this, there will be jobs for our citizens.

I have found that the price is tremendously high for anyone who is trying to lead by principle. Things are broadcast and said that are in no way true. I will fight on with every last breath I have. Please pray for me as I pray for you. We can all appreciate the fact that we are not alone in all of this economic destruction. God is still faithful and is completely in control! On this we can rest assured! May God bless you and your family!

Thank God for our 233 years of freedom!

flagMy grandfather, an amazing hero in the 10th Mountain Division, served in the Po Valley in Italy. For his service there, he received a Purple Heart for defending his country and my freedom; he never spoke about it. My father-in-law, David Hoffman bravely served in Southeast Asia and continues to be very active in Veteran’s groups. This weekend I am humbly grateful for my grandfather, other family members and patriots who served and sacrificed to protect us.

Our country continues its struggle to protect individual liberty and freedom. Our Government often takes from us those exact rights in the name of protecting us. There will always be a perception that our government is only here to help us. Yet, that help comes with a price. The price of this false perception is that we sacrifice individual accomplishment and success. Our government should be confined to the role given to it by our Founding Fathers which is to maintain ordered liberty.

Do we simply accept the government’s role as a protector and provider of all things? If we do, then we are indeed deserving of a government master. How is that freedom? The idea of being free fights against slavery to government. Let us resist the shackles and wear with pride the beautiful freedoms secured for us by the brave men and women who sacrificed, not for our government, but for their fellow countrymen! Praise God for their willingness to serve and pay the ultimate sacrifice.

Please take a moment today to say thanks to a soldier who served or is now serving. They deserve to know how grateful our nation is for their sacrifice.

Todd
