Testing experimental energy in the St. Clair River.
The Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County is working with Vortex Hydro Energy on an alternative energy solution. In an attempt to find more “green” energy opportunities, this company is testing a field of devices that convert underwater currents into electricity. Below is a video which shows the concept.
How is the public reacting? Apparently, not strongly against it or for it, so far. There are concerns related to ice jams and rusting of the equipment. Surely, through testing an implementation, these things will be addressed. What is not being discussed, thus far, is the potential negative effects on the fish. Also, it is interesting to note that this will neither be the most expensive form of electricity, nor the cheapest. At 5.5 cents per kw/hour, it is less expensive than windmill farms (6.9), yet more expensive than nuclear energy (4.6).1
